Two futures. One dated SPAN 2 result.
Follow a synthetic WTI futures portfolio through an actual calculation in the Cumulus9 demo environment, with the inputs and returned result available to inspect.
Returned initial margin, USD
$44,731.90
Calculated on 15 October 2026 with 14 October 2026, cycle C parameters. This is an actual result for a synthetic portfolio, not a customer outcome, current quote or promised saving.
1. Define the portfolio
Both positions are NYMEX WTI Crude Oil futures, clearing code CL. Positive quantities are long; negative quantities are short. Account treatment is HEDGE (H), with the default HOUSE origin. Reporting currency is USD.
| Contract | Expiry | Net position |
|---|---|---|
| NYMEX CL futures | December 2026 | +10 |
| NYMEX CL futures | January 2027 | -5 |
2. Keep the calculation basis
The demo API accepted both exact contracts and returned a successful SPAN 2 calculation. Automatic nearest-contract matching was disabled. The request used synchronous, in-memory calculation and did not save this example as a customer portfolio.

3. Inspect the components
- Historical VaR component
- $32,399.34
- Stress component
- $12,260.45
- Liquidity component
- $72.10
- Concentration component
- $0.00
- Returned initial margin
- $44,731.90
Displayed components sum to USD 44,731.89. The service returns USD 44,731.90 as the total. We preserve that one-cent rounding difference rather than adjust a component.
4. Run and compare
With an authorised demo API credential, submit the downloaded request to POST https://demo.api.cumulus9.com/portfolios. Generate a new request ID for your run and send the credential in the Authorization bearer header. Never put credentials in the portfolio file.
The ordinary calculation request uses the available parameter cycle when it runs. Repeating it after parameters change can produce a different amount. Compare the returned parameter date and cycle before comparing numbers. The downloadable response is a selected excerpt; authentication and unrelated operational fields are omitted.
A fixed-date historical replay was attempted but did not complete during this verification. Exchange parameters are not redistributed with this example. Confirm access to the dated parameter set and supported historical workflow with Cumulus9 when an exact historical replay is required.

What this example establishes
It shows a traceable portfolio input, an actual calculation and the parameter date behind it. It does not establish a universal offset, match every clearing-member add-on or replace the clearing house's margin call. A different book, account treatment, origin, parameter cycle or model configuration can change the requirement.
Run your book through it.
