Find what sits behind a margin difference.
A margin break becomes actionable when the two numbers share a clear basis. Cumulus9 calculates initial margin from position data and supports daily comparison with the supplied margin report, helping operations focus on the accounts that need investigation.

Step 1
Align positions and the report
Use the relevant start-of-day position file and authoritative margin report. Establish the account, exchange, business date, currency and margin measure represented by each row.
Step 2
Calculate and compare
Calculate initial margin on the corresponding positions. In the configured daily reconciliation workflow, differences above the chosen threshold are flagged and included in the reconciliation email.
Step 3
Trace the exception
Investigate contract identities, quantities, prices and parameter context. Retain the original comparison so corrections can be checked against the same reference.
Agree what the reference number contains
A CCP initial-margin figure, a clearer’s client requirement and a total cash call can have different scopes. Decide which is authoritative for the control and separate any broker overlays or other components before comparison. This prevents a scope difference from becoming an unexplained calculation exception.
- Match the reporting date and account hierarchy.
- Confirm whether the reference is initial margin or a wider funding requirement.
- Record the currency, parameter cycle and any agreed adjustments.
Investigate data before changing a model
The reconciliation workflow is useful for detecting reference-data differences as well as missing or mismatched positions. Strike scaling, contract multipliers and product mapping can change a result even when the position appears familiar. Preserve gross long and short detail where required, and check the exact expiry and option terms.
Separate today’s control from historical analysis
The daily comparison asks whether the current calculation agrees with the supplied report. Historical Margin asks how a portfolio behaves against available historical parameter sets. For a past discrepancy, establish the actual positions and calculation context from that date; replaying today’s book on old parameters answers a different question.
Questions before you integrate
- What files are needed for daily reconciliation?
- The documented SFTP workflow uses start-of-day positions and a margin report broken down by account and exchange. The agreed feed mapping determines the precise fields and schedule. Keep the report’s scope and business date clear.
- Can we choose which differences need attention?
- Yes. The daily reconciliation workflow supports a configurable threshold for highlighting differences. Set it against the control you need, including currency and rounding conventions, rather than choosing a tolerance solely to suppress exceptions.
- Does a difference mean the CCP or broker is wrong?
- No. A difference identifies something to investigate. Positions, calculation timing, parameters, reporting scope and additional requirements can all explain a mismatch. Establish a like-for-like comparison before drawing a conclusion.
- Can Cumulus9 help with a historical margin question?
- Historical Margin supports calculation against available historical parameter sets. A reconciliation of an actual past call also needs the positions, account treatment and reference report from that date. Agree the evidence available before treating a replay as a reconstruction of the original call.
